Jean-Baptiste Isabey was a close associate of the Vernet family, a friend of Carle and teacher of his son Horace, whom he employed in his studio from
employed in his studio from 1811. The latter painted a famous portrait of his Mentor in 1828 (Paris
Musée du Louvre).
Louise Vernet, born in 1814, appears to be around twelve years old on our canvas. Cherished by her parents, admired
admired for her grace and purity, she would become a favorite of many young artists when Horace Vernet took over
Académie de France in Rome. His portrait of her has become an icon of Romanticism.
Romanticism (1831, Paris, Musée du Louvre). Marie Antoine Delannoy thought of marrying her for a while, but Charles Gleyre
fell in love with her. Louise Vernet finally married Paul Delaroche in 1835.
