Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU (1712-1778). Autograph manuscript, Loi des Wisigots, [ca. 1745]; 2pages in-4, on column. This text can be dated to around 1745, when Rousseau was working for his patron Mme Dupin on a book about women and reflections on Montesquieu's Esprit des lois; there are autograph corrections and additions by Madame DUPIN on this manuscript. "After the death of the father, the mother was entirely the mistress of her children's marriage. After the mother's death, Loy says that the brothers interfered in their sisters' marriages. There is no mention in this Loy of the sisters interfering in the marriage of their brothers, and we therefore observe that this Loy must often find itself in a case that is impossible to execute: that is, whenever there were brothers who were minors and younger than the sisters"... Etc.
