Charles BAUDELAIRE (1821-1867). L.A.S. "C.B.", [ca. March 20, 1861], "Note à Poulet-Malassis"; 1page in-8. On his financial troubles. This concerns bills to be discounted. "The Hetzel affair is going badly; Hetzel will present the bills, but not before the end of the month; - before April 10 only. The reason is that he doesn't want to jeopardize his personal deadline by risking having his package peeled, as the refusal of any paper should be considered by him as offensive and implying for him the necessity of withdrawing the whole thing. Although he has shown a great deal of friendship for me and Malassis, it is clear that he has been spoken to unfavorably about Malassis and De Broise; [...] he has told me of probable difficulties in the business of Malassis, and finally of a production that is no longer sufficiently fruitful"... Correspondance (Pléiade), t.II, p. 134.
