Alphonse DAUDET (1840-1897) and Léon HENNIQUE (1851-1935). Partly autograph manuscript by both of La Petite Paroisse, "play in 4 acts"; 109pages in-fol. and 92pages in-4.
Manuscript of an unpublished collaborative play.
Alphonse Daudet's novel La Petite Paroisse, "mœurs conjugales", had been published in 1895 by Lemerre; for this theatrical adaptation, Daudet reunited with his friend Léon Hennique, with whom he had already worked on La Menteuse in 1892.
Act 1 is largely by Daudet (15 pages out of 27), dictated to his secretary Jules Ebner, with a few additions and corrections by Hennique (as well as pages 16-27). Two different versions exist of the 2nd and 3rd acts, one by Daudet, dictated to Ebner, the other by Hennique. Act 4 is written entirely by Léon Hennique.
This play, premiered at the Théâtre Antoine on January 20, 1901, seems to have remained unpublished.
Attached is an autograph manuscript by Alphonse DAUDET (2 1/2 pages in-4), sketching out a few scenes, a first draft in a hand distorted by illness, a moving testimony to the pain ("la doulou") that gnawed at Daudet.
