Émile ZOLA. L.A.S., Paris March 2, 1866, [to publisher Achille Faure]; 2pages in-8.
On the publication of Mes Haines.
He sends his manuscript: "I have chosen a title that I think is excellent: Mes Haines, and I have written about ten pages to serve as a preface and explain the title.
I think the business is very feasible [...] It certainly won't be a success, but the publicity I'll get and the copies that will be sold will offset your expenses; I even hope there will be a profit for your house, because I promise to make the bass drum beat in a terrible way."
He recommends reading "the preface, and the articles on the Vie de Jules César, Proudhon et Courbet, Un catholique hystérique, l'Abbé ***, le Supplice d'une femme, etc.".
He eagerly awaits the publisher's response, whose latest publications he will announce. Finally, he asks: "What is the title of Vallès' next volume?"
