Jean-Paul SARTRE (1905-1980). Autograph manuscripts for La Mort dans l'âme; 5pages and a half in-4 and 17pages in-fol. in sheets, in flapped linen folder and negro head chagrin slipcase.
Drafts for the end of the first part of La Mort dans l'âme, third volume of Les Chemins de la Liberté, published in 1949.
In midnight-blue ink on squared sheets of paper, the manuscript shows numerous erasures and corrections, and variants with the printed text. These sheets relate to the final episode of Part One, and correspond to pages 1213 to 1342 of the Œuvres romanesques in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade.
In a village, Mathieu and his comrades Clapot, Pinette and Dandieu see the Germans arrive; this episode is inspired by an autobiographical event.
