"Permit me to address you, Monsieur, to ask you for clarification on the life and works of M. Mariotte of the former Académie des Sciences. I know your taste for it, your zeal for everything that can contribute to the progress of the human spirit, and I hope you will not refute me. I have formed the project of rendering to the academicians who died before 1699 the [...] of praise that M. de Fontenelle and his successors have rendered to the others, and as M. Mariotte was from Dijon, I flattered myself that I would find in it all the details that might interest me. This city has always distinguished itself for its love of the Sciences and for the honors bestowed on those who have cultivated them there".
