COUTHON Georges Auguste [Orcet, 1755 - Paris, 1794], French politician, member of the Puy-de-Dôme Convention.
Autograph letter signed to a friend. January 21, 1790; 2 pages small in-4°.
Couthon first expresses his admiration for Lafayette: "the brave and worthy commander of our national militia interests me so much, by his principles and patriotic conduct, there is between him, you and me, so much connection, by his indisposition against the enemies of the public good, that I would sacrifice myself for him, imagining sacrificing myself for my part". He then evokes his wife, who has given birth to a son: "he comes in good time, he will suck the milk of liberty, and if his father lives, he hopes not to let him forget his duties as a citizen." Finally, he turns to the Municipal Elections: "We are busy forming our municipality. Let me begin by congratulating the town on having you as its mayor, for I have no doubt that you will be appointed. For myself, I claim nothing, but if I obtain something from the indulgence of my citizens, the first pleasure to which I will be sensitive will be to become your colleague [...] and never doubt the absolute devotion of your best friend".
