Thunberg (1743-1828) was Swedish surgeon and botanist and a follower Linnaeus. He entered the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) as a surgeon on board the Schoonzicht. Thunberg sailed in 1775 for Batavia in Java and finally ended up at the Dutch trading post at Nagasaki, where he stayed on Deshima island. His freedom to move around and study was very limited and only in 1776 was he permitted to travel though Japan to Yedo together w. a Dutch delegation under Arend Willem Feith. (total 4)
