With the discovery of Catalonia, Chéreau creates a new pictorial identity, leaving behind his classical training. In a first step he makes works based on discrete colors and wide compositions. In the sixties he began to experiment with "grattage", scratching the pictorial surface to suggest ghostly forms. Chéreau exhibited both in his native France and in his adopted Barcelona, in galleries such as René Métras (1963) and As (1969).
