DONALD BEACHLER (Hartford, 1956). "Tangram" 1989. Ink on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. With label of the gallery Fernando Alcolea, Barcelona, on the back. Size: 28 x 22 cm; 52 x 45 cm (frame). Donald Baechler initially trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art, later emigrating to Germany, where he completed his studies. After his stay in Germany, he returned to the New York scene in 1980, where he soon became part of the vibrant Lower Manhattan art scene, often exhibiting in the East Village. In this context, Baechler worked and exhibited alongside Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Baechler's work works with the imagery of the world of childhood, the subconscious, the dream world. The artist is also connected with the "Art Brut" movement. His work thus displays a profoundly deceptive naivety, which conceals conceptual and symbolic games. Although throughout his career he has worked mainly as a painter, the artist also has a sculptor's side, which fits in with the work of Roy Lichtenstein, Alex Katz or Carroll Dunham.
