Entry of Christ into Jerusalem. Second half of 16th century.
Oil on canvas.
Impressive gilt frame (slightly damaged).
The bright colours in the clothing, contrasting with the dark sky in which there are some rays of light around Christ, situate this painting in the region of Venice. Possibly this anonymous master circulated in the vicinity of Tintoretto (1518-1594) who used a similar approach for the landscapes in the background of his religious scenes, an example are Tintoretto’s Adam and Eve (inv. 48) and Cain and Abel (inv. 41) in the collection of the Gallerie dell' Accademia di Venezia.
