Christ on the Cross.
Boxwood. With inscription on reverse 'Artus Quelinus fecit Antverpia 1702'.
Gilt 19th-century frame set in gold leather depicting a monkey amidst plants.
Top left middle finger missing.
Provenance:
Our Lady Jesuit College, Antwerp
Private collection, Brasschaat
Given the exceptional quality of the carving, an attribution to the Baroque sculptor Artus Quellinus II (1625-1700) does not seem so far-fetched. However, the inscription on the back of Christ dated 1702 situates the sculpture after the master's death in 1700. Further research is needed to clarify the origin of the inscription and the attribution of the sculpture.
