A exceptional early 17th century icon depicting Saint Maksim the Greek ('Prepodobnyj Maksim Grek').
Moscow. Trinity Monastery Zagorsk.
Icon. Tempera on panel.
Certificate:
Prof. Dr. E. Voordeckers, Ghent, 8.6.1977, R. 770.926
Characteristic and rare representation of this saint (1470-1556) because of the frontal bust form, the penetrating eyes, the flat monk's hat on the head, the very broad long beard, the quill in the right hand and an opened book in the left with the salutation of one of his tracts. Above the head appear the three angels of the Philoxenia of Abraham (Gen. XVIII), symbol of the Trinity.
Probably no kovcheg and protected from warping by two wedges, embedded in the thickness of the panel in head and base. Back is covered with linen and owes good condition to it. Raised and flat edges covered with basma in hammered copper tin.
Nailed halo missing.
