Oil and vinegar cruet. Brussels. 1748-50. Presumed silversmith Petrus Augustinus Ivens. Silver and glass. Silver marks: city hallmarks; deanery letter X crowned for 1748-50; initials PI, presumably for silversmith Petrus Augustinus Ivens. Attached mark of a crowned, Burgundian cross (poinçon of pardon, introduced after the edict of Empress Maria-Theresia, 1749). Eight doe feet support the two round baskets, bordered at the bottom with volutes. The eight bars each feature a mascaron, above which is a stylized leaf motif. The upper part of both baskets has a profiled rim with four straight projections. Same design for the two rings intended for the bottle stoppers. The lower ringed stem rests on a square block connecting the two baskets; it is partially openwork and extends to the oval handle composed of volutes. Two chains are attached to the bottom of the handle for hanging the bottle stoppers. Original glass receptacles. Source: J. Vanwittenberghe, in expo.cat.
