SATISH GUJRAL (1925-2020) UNTITLED, SIGNED TOP LEFT, ACRYLIC ON CANVAS Size: 53.5 x 36 inches Property of Mr & Mrs Gupta Family Footnotes: Emerging from the crucible of pre-Partition Punjab, Satish Gujral epitomized artistic prowess across myriad realms—painting, sculpture, murals, and architecture. Born on December 25, 1925, in Jhelum, his journey into the realm of creativity was spurred by familial encouragement, blossoming amidst the backdrop of childhood adversity, where a tragic accident robbed him of speech and hearing.Guided by the hallowed halls of Mayo School of Art, Lahore, and briefly by the artistic enclave of Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, Gujral forged a path uniquely his own, diverging from the Progressive Artists’ Group to embrace a singular vision of Indian modernism. The crucible of personal upheaval and the seismic shifts of Partition lent an indelible hue to his artistic oeuvre, channeling pain into poignant expressions. A sojourn to Mexico in 1952 proved transformative, where he imbibed the essence of muralism from luminaries like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, crafting monumental works in mosaic and ceramic, and embracing unconventional mediums like burnt wood and steel. His architectural opus, notably the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi, earned global acclaim, hailed as a pinnacle of twentieth-century design. Gujral's accolades, spanning from the Da Vinci Award to the Padma Vibhushan, stand as a testament to his enduring legacy. As the curtain fell on his earthly odyssey on March 26, 2020,
