Appraisal by Mr. Louis-Edouard BEHR.
Mounted balloons were the beginnings of airmail: a mounted balloon was a letter sent by gas balloon on the occasion of the siege of Paris during the 1870 war against the Prussians. There were 66 departures between September 23, 1870 and January 28, 1871, carrying some 2,500,000 letters.
