Jean-Paul CASTAIGNET 1852-1934
"Saint-Palais
Oil on canvas, signed and located lower right, signed on the reverse on the stretcher.
Louis XVI style wood and gilded stucco frame.
Height: 100 cm. Length: 130 cm.
Our painting offers a rare view of the beginning of the Côte Sauvage, taken in the years 1900 - 1910 from the town of Saint Palais sur Mer on the immediate outskirts of Royan, with the Terre Nègre lighthouse silhouetted against the horizon on the right, from the Concié beach.
The lower part of the canvas is enlarged by one centimetre, to fit perfectly into the frame. This enlargement consists of a wooden stick painted in the same tones as the lower part of the composition. This similarity of tones and brushstrokes suggests that this perfectly executed addition, which is difficult to detect, was made at the same time as the canvas was created, probably by the artist himself.
