Painted terracotta guan jar, Machang period, Majiayao culture, China, 3300 - 2000 B.C.
The body is decorated with two zoomorphic figures characteristic of the Machang vocabulary, the four bent limbs attached to a long torso surmounted by a small round head. Feathers or tufts of hair are found at the ends of the limbs and at the joints. The neck is narrow and slightly flared, decorated with circles on the inside.

These enigmatic motifs are interpreted in various ways: inspired by shamanic costumes or representing abstract creatures.
