Large white porcelain Damo figure, China, Dehua, 19th - 20th century
Bodhidharma is depicted standing, with half-closed eyes, bushy eyebrows on a prominent forehead, beard and moustache marked by scrolls. These two incisors rest on a thick lower lip, giving him a very realistic effect. He wears a long monastic robe with well-defined folds, gathered in his hands on his chest. Bare feet protrude from the bottom of the robe. On the back, a square molded seal, with the inscription boji yuren - 博及漁人 - "Virtue extends to all, including sinners". Mark used by the potter Su Xuejin (1869-1919).
