The valuable painting, of high pictorial quality, takes up with variations, the series of portraits made by Antonello da Messina in the years corresponding to his Venetian sojourn in 1475/1476. The man depicted in the small walnut panel, wears, as in the portraits in the Borghese Gallery in Rome and Palazzo Madama in Turin, a red robe and a black berretta, typical garments of Venetian patricians of the time
