The first Assembly of Notables was held from February 22 to May 25, 1787. Convened by the King, it was the first attempt to reform the bankrupt State before the Estates-General. Held under the aegis of Calonne, Comptroller General of Finances, it was unwilling to endorse the ambitious tax reform projects proposed by the minister, who himself fell from grace during the session.
