A LARGE DRAWING DEPICTING RAM SINGH II, MAHARAO OF KOTAH HUNTING, RAJASTHAN, CIRCA 1840 watercolour and ink on paper, the ruler depicted with his retinue on a parapet, shooting at five tigers in the hilly landscape below, various devanagari inscriptions and sketched details, including a panther, trees, further men and animals and buildings, framed, 49.5 x 72cm approx. Provenance: Private Collection, London, since 1966. ’Drawings of Ram Singh hunting tigers are rare, but there is another in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (inv. no.2013-77-35)’. Maharao Ram Singh II of Kotah (r. 1826-1866) is considered the last of the major Rajasthani patrons of court painting, and commissioned a number of large scale paintings of hunting and processions.
