Balinese landscape. 1977
Oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard. Signed lower right: Arie Smit Bali '77, framed.
Adrianus Wilhelmus, known as "Arie" Smit, was a Dutch-born painter active in Bali. After studying graphic design in Rotterdam, he began working for the Royal Netherlands Indian Army in the Netherlands Indies in 1938.
The present work combines the influences of Smit's Impressionist models from his student days with echoes of his work as a lithographer in Batavia, which is reflected in the numerous fine, almost sketchy contour lines.
