Big chawan. Nezumi-Shino. Mino area, Owari province. Early Edo period, 17th century.
Cylindrical form, slightly recessed below the rim, on a very flat foot ring, spirally twisted inside. A thin, gray glaze over a white glaze, leaving the base uncovered, with a cut-out line pattern possibly depicting a fishing net and pine trees. Wooden box, labeled on the lid: Nezumi-Shino Mino ko-gama (Nezumi-Shino, old kiln in Mino) and signed: Taku shiki and seal: Taku.
Katō Takuo (1917-2005) was an important potter and researcher into the production techniques of ancient ceramics, especially Persian lustre ware and ceramics from the Mino region.
