Netsuke of a very large shoki and oni. Wood. 18th century.
Standing with mighty boots on his feet, Shoki holds the two legs of oni, who is sitting on his shoulder and holding on to Shoki's cap. The devil hunter looks up at his opponent, as if resigned to the fact that he will not be able to disarm the oni. Remnants of black lacquer in the indentations.
The style and size are reminiscent of the netsuke signed by Seibei and dated 1750 in the Musée d'Ennery in Paris. The Soken kisho already states that Seibei was highly valued.
H 13.6 cm
Provenance
Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired in the 1970s/80s in the German art trade
