Enlisted as a volunteer in 1792, Jean Étienne Clément-Lacoste led a brilliant military career under the Empire. He took part in the emblematic battle of Pont d'Arcole, then in the campaigns of Egypt, Prussia, Poland and Spain. He was promoted to colonel on the battlefield of Eylau, made a baron d'Empire in 1809, before becoming brigadier general in 1813. Wounded at the battle of Craonne, he died of his wounds in Paris on April 27, 1814.
