LUCIEN COUTAUD (1904-1977) PAINTER-CARTONNIER & ATELIER PINTON FRÈRES IN AUBUSSON "Passe-Temps II" from the "Les Jeux" series created around [1947-1948]. Lice tapestry. Colored wool. Signed COUTAUD in the weft lower right, bears the weaver's monogram P. F. Aubusson in the weft lower left, 198 x 246 cm Historical background: Lucien Coutaud initially created eight separate cartons for this Les Jeux series. He used them to form eleven different compositions, including one to four of these cartoons, and to design a folding screen; all these works were woven by the Atelier Pinton Frères in Aubusson. The artist repeatedly altered the order and choice of panels for these wall tapestries, hence the different variants known for this series. Public collection and related works : Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes - A model identical to our tapestry is preserved in the collections of this institution. Exhibition and related work : - Lucien Coutaud - Galerie Moderne, Stockholm, 1952. A copy identical to our tapestry, preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes, presented at this event. - Lucien Coutaud, "œuvre tissé" - Musée départemental de la tapisserie, Centre Culturel et Artistique Jean Lurçat, Aubusson, October 1988 to January 1989. The gouache models of the eight panels forming the Les Jeux series and the copy identical to our tapestry, kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes, exhibited at this event.
