ADOUMA DANCE MASK This mask features a cubist face. The mouth and nose are sculpted in high relief, and the rounded forehead is adorned with a ridge rising from the top of the nose. This ridge and the superciliary arches are highlighted by a red line. The eyes are represented by two discreet circular cavities, enriched with mirror chips imported from Europe. Interesting, refined decoration with harmonious lines. Wood. Red paint, kaolin, mirror chips. Localized traces of portage on the inner walls. Inscribed with the following words Sibiti Yoyo 1901 . Adouma, southeastern Gabon. Length: 39.5 cm. Width 20.5 cm. PROVENANCE : GAÏA sale, Paris, May 26, 2008, catalog pages 42, 43. Former collection of a painter from Cannes, exchanged for one of his works with Dr. Jean-Claude Andrault around the middle of the 20th century. For many years, Dr. Andrault ran a hospital in the heart of Kota country. He is consulted as one of the leading specialists in Kota art, and is co-author with Yves Le Fur of the book Résonances, Ed. Dapper, 1990.
