Two tile friezes with cypress decor, Ottoman Syria, Damascus, 18th century Siliceous ceramic tiles with polychrome-painted decoration under a transparent glaze of a frieze of stylized cypress trees with checkerboard or scale foliage, set against a background of small bouquets of tulips. Each panel is composed of two full tiles and two halves and is framed. Size of a complete tile: approx. 21 x 23 cm Sight size of panels: 21.2 x 69.2 and 21.2 x 65.6 cm Accident, breakage, missing parts, blocking The decoration on these panels echoes a design found on the walls of the mausoleum of Shaykh Muhyî ad-Dîn ibn al-'Arabî in Damascus, dating from 1760-61. Several collections hold similar tiles, including the Musée du Louvre in Paris (UCAD 72 - 75).
