This sanguine depicts one of the episodes in Louis XIV's Flanders campaign from May 1667. The artist shows the king emerging from the trench he has just inspected, and the Duc de Noailles, hat down, presenting his company.
The lost painting is known thanks to the tapestry at the Manufacture des Gobelins, from l'Histoire du Roy.
Versailles also has a study in black stone for the tapestry, done four-handed with Charles Le Brun (Château de Versailles, inv. MV 7876).
