Provenance Sale at Drouot Rive Gauche, Champetier de Ribes, March 16, 1976, n° 15 (as "Entourage de Van Cleve") There are several versions of this composition by Joos van Cleve and his workshop, in which the Flemish master drew inspiration for the pose of the figures from Giampietrino's Madonna of the Cherries. The versions closest to our panel, in which the cherries held by the child have been replaced by a gold-plated cross, and the vase on the left and the column with the caprid skull on the right have been added, are in the Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw and the Museo diocesano in Bressanone (file in R.K.D, Rijksbureau voor KunsthistorischeDocumentatie, permalink no. 41682; J. O. Hand, Joos van Cleve. The Complete Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, p. 188, no. 112.20 and 112.21). These last two paintings do not feature landscapes, but architecture.
