Fragment of a Phrygian frieze slab with rider. Last quarter of the 6th century BC. H 28.9 cm, W 21.8 cm, D 5.7 cm. Gray to red-brown terracotta. Molded relief. Hole for mounting at the top left, a protruding ledge at the bottom. Painted in ochre, dark brown and black. Depicted is a rider in richly decorated robes facing right, a horse with a colorful mane, a blanket with a jagged edge and a triskeles on its rump. Wonderful example of painted sculpture from the late Archaic period! With certificate of authenticity from Galerie Günter Puhze, Freiburg im Breisgau! Published in: Christie's New York Auction Antiquities June 13, 2000, lot 502 (hammer price 9.400,- US $, copy enclosed).
