Bronze statuette of an ibis. Late to Ptolemaic period, 664 - 30 BC. H 6.5 cm and with stand 11.3 cm, L 13.4 cm. Bronze hollow casting. Carved details such as the tail feather. The eyes are made of dark blue glass inlay. Very high quality work! In ancient Egyptian mythology, the ibis stands for Thoth, the god of wisdom, science, magic, writing and the moon as well as - very importantly - the calendar. In the context of the cult of the dead, he is of great importance as the recorder of the judgment of the dead. Dark green patina, legs missing, small cracks in the front wing on the left side, mounted on a wooden stand. Provenance: From the collection A. M.; in Germany since 2015 and in the EU since 1975; acquired in the art trade.
