Four-panel icon with Mother of God. Russia, 2nd half 19th century. H 31.5cm, W 26.5cm. Tempera painting on chalk ground and wood, two vertical back pontics (upper one missing), depictions of "Mother of God soothe my sorrow" (on gold ground), "Mother of God seeking out the forsaken" (nimbuses and details of the clothing gilded), "Mother of God soothing the tormented" (on a gold background), "Mother of God softening the evil hearts" (on a gold background), Cyrillic tituli of the depictions above and below, ancient Greek inscription "MHP" and "ΘY" on the respective left and right corners of the picture or Nimbus of the Mother of God, notes by the icon painter in lead and incised on the reverse. Minor chips to the wooden edge, some gold abrasion, slight signs of wear due to age. Provenance: Ex Gorny & Mosch 300, 2023, lot 463; from the West German private collection B. H., acquired from 1985 and before 1995.
