Weaving roll holder. Jimini, Ivory Coast. H 19cm. Carved with a buffalo head with a vertically designed pair of horns and angular notches on the horns and the flat body. The Jimini are a subgroup of the Senufo, who also belong to the Volta people. They live in the north-eastern part of the Ivory Coast, east of the Nzi River, around the town of Dabakala. The Kulango are their neighbors to the east, the Dioula to the north and the Baule to the south. As with many ethnic groups who borrow artistic elements from their neighbors and integrate them into their works, there is a clear mixture of Senufo and Kulango elements. Black-brown, shiny patina; abrasions, otherwise intact. Provenance: ex Peter Werner Collection, Munich; ex Walter Schmidt Collection, Igls/Innsbruck; ex Zemanek-Münster Auction 86, Würzburg 27 May 2017, lot 26.
