Pair of ritual sticks edan. Yoruba, Nigeria. H 31cm. Made of bronze for the Oshugbo/Ogboni society, connected by a chain, with tapered headdress, scarification marks on the forehead, the male figure with the Ogboni gesture, the female figure grasping her breasts; both figures with beards, probably conceived as hermaphrodites; protruding lugs on both figures with holes for attaching bells. Brown-greenish patina with traces of verdigris, intact Provenance: ex collection Manfred Schäfer, Ulm.
