Extremely rare miniature mask. Fang, Gabon. H 6.3cm. With deep-set, dot-shaped eyes, zigzag-shaped scarification marks on both sides of the nose and forehead crease up to the narrow nose; remains of white pigment on the front, painted brownish-black on the back. While miniature masks are widespread among the peoples of western Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia (Dan, Ngere, etc.), as well as in the D.R. Congo (West Pende), miniature masks of the Fang are considered extremely rare. Intact. Provenance: Ex Galerie Dogon, Monika Edelmaier, Berlin, acquired in the 1970s.
