Golden tabatiere. Frederick William IV (1840 - 1861), around 1840 or shortly thereafter. Golden box in the Rococo style (so-called 3rd Rococo, from around 1840). Curved sides with indented fluting and elaborate, all-over engraving in the form of rocailles (also on the base), the lid inset with a shell cameo (approx. 42 x 31mm) with the portrait of the king (after a design by the medallist Christoph Carl Pfeuffer). Worked in yellow gold on the outside, red gold on the inside. Inside the bottom gold hallmark 14 carat (583/1000 fine) and master's mark WS. Height 38 mm, width 88.5 mm, depth 63.5 mm, 186.16 g. RRR! Magnificent specimen! Exceptionally high quality work from royal ownership! Gold! Such golden tabatiers were usually given to selected persons as a personal token of favor from the monarch, regularly with an image of the king. These boxes were often also filled with other precious objects or gold coins. This tradition goes back well into the 18th century. Unfortunately, neither the occasion nor the identity of the recipient have been handed down to us, but the quality and execution leave no doubt that this is a piece of this kind from the Hohenzollern family. Due to the stylistic dating, it is not unlikely that the piece was given as a gift in connection with the accession of Frederick William IV or the various homage ceremonies that followed.
