Gold ring with bonus eventus. Ring ca. mid-19th century, Roman gem, 1st century A.D. 5.69g, ring size 59. Early Victorian gold ring with later inscription "In Memory of William Manson ob 19 June 1852 ae 52" on the ring setting. Set with a Roman gem of green chrome chalcedony with the deity Bonus Eventus (= happy outcome) holding a patera in one hand and poppy capsules in the other. Gold! William Manson was an auctioneer who joined Christie's as a partner in 1831 on the death of James Christie Jr. and was replaced by his brother Edward after his death. Chrome chalcedony is a rare variety of chalcedony. Intact. Provenance: Purchased from Malcom Hay, London, on August 25, 2018, who acquired the ring from the Danish art dealer Anders Egeskov in 2005-2010.
