[GIDE, André] The notebooks of André Walter. Oeuvre posthume. Paris Librairie de l'art indépendant [Bailly] 1891 In-12. Mouse-gray jansenist morocco signed Semet & Plumelle, ribbed spine, burgundy morocco lining with gilt fillet, gray tabis endpapers, gilt edges, covers and spine cons. (spine very slightly yellowed, very slight rubbing to one nerve). In a gilt and gray marbled paper slipcase. Gide's first published work and the first edition, published anonymously on April 25, 1891. The publisher Perrin published a few weeks before the original, but as Gide had given Bailly the "bon à tirer" well in advance, the edition of L'Art indépendant was supposed to be the first. Bailly dragged his feet, so Perrin went ahead and printed the text, which Gide judged to be faulty, and had it scrapped "under his supervision" (ref. Talvart 7-37), except for +/- 70 from the press office. Without the notice signed P.C. (i.e. Pierre Chrysis, pseud. of P. Louÿs) from the original edition. Edition of 190 copies, one of 20 on japon (no. 32 written in ink and signed "A. W."). Ref. Naville II.
