Div. places 1921-1924 Schoolbook in-8° square: 148 pp. written in brown, black, royal blue and turquoise ink and illustrated with Indian ink drawings heightened with colored pencils, on lined paper (slightly browned, a few small stains, rare faint wetnesses, slight discharges or migrations of ink and/or color). Grey cloth boards with black embossed frame on upper board with ms. title in India ink, red tr. (russ, spine worn, upper spine split). Exceptional notebook by a French military sailor who wrote down the text of some forty sailor or fashion songs, adorned with talented drawings in often free colors depicting the women of these songs, as he imagined them, with great character and very much in the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. Titles include: "Sérénata", "Le Cabanon", "Margot la blonde", "Ma petite fauvette", "L'Étoile du marin", "La Marine", "Le dernier tango", "Il était intimidé", "You You la Japonnaisse [sic]", "Dans les bouges de Paris", "Addio Santiago", etc. Each text ends with a mention of the artist. Each text ends with the date and place of writing: the cuirassier "Bretagne" in Toulon, Ajaccio, Boston, etc., then the gunboats "Batailleuse" and "Alerte", in Saint-Servan, Rochefort, Dunkirk, Ostend, and finally the aviso "L'Ancre" in Brest. Enriched by 1 flyleaf with a fragment of a song by the same hand.
