[VOLTAIRE] Fragments sur l'Inde, sur le général Lalli, et sur le comte de Monrangiés. [Genève G. Cramer] 1773 In-8° : viii-184 pp. (rare marginal spotting, faint wetness or stains). Marbled basane, marbled paper boards, spine gilt, red edges (some slight rubbing, spine slightly faded). Very good copy. First edition of this work on India, with a particular focus on the actions of General Lally, whose siege of Pondicherry in 1760 and loss to the English led to his execution. Voltaire's intention with this book was to rehabilitate Lally's memory. Followed by "Précis du procès de Mr. le comte de Morangies, contre la famille Verron". Voltaire's defenses contributed to the rehabilitation - posthumously for Lally - of each of them. Ref. Bengesco 1828. - Voltaire's printed work at BN 4311. - Barbier II:494.
