Livre d'or de Jules Mathieu, gouverneur de la province de Liège. Liège 1937-1948 In-12 square: [22] ff. used, many bl. ff. on stained laid paper, several signatures identified in black pencil. Glazed calf signed Van Bellinghen in Brussels, gilt and cold-edged right-hand lace encircling the boards, gilt floral mute spine with false nerves, decorated green and gold silk linings framed with a gilt roul., same silk endpapers, gilt t. (slightly rubbed). More than 130 autograph signatures from the royal family and personalities from the Belgian and foreign political, diplomatic and cultural worlds, collected during ceremonies at the Provincial Palace. The collection begins with a luncheon on the occasion of King Leopold III's visit "to the slums of the Liège region" (28-05-1937). Also: inauguration of the Interallied Memorial (20-07-1937). Names: Henri de Man, Cardinal van Roey, Francis Poulenc (concert, 16-01-1939), Camille Mauclair, Sacha Guitry, André Maurois, Louis Madelin, Harry Baur, etc. Royal family: Princess Henriette of Belgium, Queen Elisabeth and children of Leopold III (1939). Many tributes to Mme Mathieu and "Monsieur le gouverneur". Prov. J. Mathieu (1887-1943), member of the P.O.B. and militant of the Walloon movement, was Governor from 1937 to his death.
