BONEFONIUS, Joannes Basia, tam Latino, quam Gallico idiomate edita. Editio ultima [...] emendatior. Leiden N. Hercules 1659 12mo: [12]-215 [= 251]-[1 bl.] pp. (minor marg. dampstaining). Contemp. vellum, flat spine (warping, few spots). Good copy. Leiden ed. of the famous Pancharis (1587) of the Clermont poet Bonnefons (1554-1614), one of the best imitations of Janus Secundus' Basia. These fine erotic verses are followed by a poem on the city of Dijon, the Tumultus Gallicus and a collection of occasional poems; with in addition the "Imitations and Gaytés amoureuses", as well as the French translation of Pancharis by the Auvergnat poet Gilles Durant seigneur de la Bergerie (also 1554-1614). "No poet of the 16th century has better painted what may be called the sad happiness, the sadness born of pleasure, the melancholy habit of tender souls to associate the idea of death with the idea of appeased voluptuousness" (Gay). Nice engr. front. (Venus & Amor). According to Willems this ed. was printed by Fr. Hackius and sold by N. Hercules. Ref. Willems 1693 (ext. note). - STCN.
