Contemporary marbled calf, boards framed with triple gilt fillet, gilt ribbed spines, red edges (upper jaws split, upper head of vol. II missing, piece of leather missing and reattached to upper board of vol. I, leather on lower cover of same vol. split at bottom, minor wear, corners dulled, lower ones more severely). First edition of this work by the French geographer in the service of Louis XV, Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771), illustrated with 150 etchings: title-frontispiece after Eisen, engraved title after and by Martinet in part 3, and 148 military plates on double pages, often folding, showing strategic positions and movements during battles (watercolors), city plans and a "section of the infernal machine" (t.
