The painting is closely related to the work of Peter Balten, one of the first generation of artists to invent kermesses and village scenes full of verve in the tradition of Pieter Brueghel, with whom he collaborated. With a procession in front of the church in the background, banquets, markets and dancing in the foreground, the composition is a fine representation of the Flemish festivities so popular at the time, and represented by so many artists.
