CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de). Les Aventures du Dernier Abencerage. Paris: Édouard Pelletan, 1897. - In-8, 259 x 179: portrait, 135 pp. printed cover. Brown morocco, boards framed in havana morocco with gilt fillet and gilt roulette, first board decorated in the center with a coat of arms accompanied by pieces of arms, mosaicked in dark blue, brown, maroon, mustard and gray, on a four-lobed background of khaki morocco edged with a listel of gray morocco, ornate ribbed spine, interior gilt fillets, purple moiré silk lining and endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved (Ch. Meunier 99). Deluxe edition at 400 copies, illustrated with a portrait of the author by Florian after a medal by David d'Angers and 43 wood-engraved compositions by Florian after Daniel VIERGE (1851-1904), including 10 full-page. One of 320 in-8 copies, this being one of 250 on Marais vellum (no. 347). Enriched with an additional proof of pages 18-19 and 23-24. A splendid copy in a contemporary binding by Charles Meunier. Minor rubbing to nerves. Provenance: Anonymous bookplate consisting of a cross and a monogram.
