Dark blue morocco, first cover decorated with two gilded butterflies and garlands of gilded and mosaic leaves in dark green, brown and brown morocco, held with a light blue morocco mosaic ribbon, spine decorated in the center with two gilt swallows, gilt fillet decorated with gilt and mosaic foliage inside, gilt ribbon at the corners, burgundy moiré silk lining and endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, lined case (Ch. Meunier).
First published on November 1, 1840 in the Revue des Deux Mondes. It is prefaced by Anatole France and illustrated with 19 compositions drawn and engraved by Adolphe LALAUZE (1838-1906).
Edition of 525 copies. This is one of 105 on Arches vellum, including two states of the etchings, one before the letter with remarks (no. 114).
