Red half-maroquin, gilt fillets, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (H. Blanchetière). First edition of the second part of the Rougon-Macquart series, of which no large-format copies were printed. A very fine copy bound by Blanchetière, complete with boards and back cover dated 1872. From the library of Valentine Zuloaga, with a bookplate designed by her husband, the Spanish painter Ignacio Zuloaga y Zabaleta (1870-1945). Soiling and a few stains to cover. Scattered foxing.
